An asteroid bash and an asteroid smash
Every year on June 30, the space community observes Asteroid Day, the anniversary of the Tunguska blast. Markus Payer, Asteroid Foundation Chair, joins us to talk about this year's Asteroid Day festivities. We also get an update on the results of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) with Terik Daly, a planetary scientist and the Planetary Impact Laboratory manager at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. He’ll tell us more about the aftermath of DART’s smashing encounter with asteroid Dimorphos. Then Bruce Betts, our chief scientist, discusses what The Planetary Society’s asteroid-hunting grant winners have been up and in What's Up.

For the start of our ninth year of the Space Policy Edition, Dr. Launius joins the show to discuss the ways in which human spaceflight exhibit...

Astronomical and planetary science discoveries often unfold in strange and serendipitous ways. We discuss the delightfully unpredictable nature of space discoveries with Chris Lintott, author of the upcoming book "Accidental Astronomy: How Random Discoveries Shape the Science of Space." Then, Bruce Betts, our chief scientist, gives us a new way to think about the scale of our Solar System in Wh...

    If you can settle and defend your moon territory from foreign invaders, then its effectively yours regardless of any treaty. No one can do that right now.

    Curious but in the future how would that work if say private companies wanted to mine the asteroid belt? Wouldn't they own the minerals that they mined? Genuinely curious, maybe new laws or treaties would be drawn up or made once we got to that technological level

    Technically doesn’t it only apply to the countries that signed it and their power and willingness to enforce it? If a corporation wanted to set out and build a moon colony and then hold a bunch of inert iron cylinders in orbit over earth they’d effectively hold the entire earth hostage and thus render the treaty unenforceable

    • @loveller
      @loveller 7 днів тому

      They’d still need to launch them back to earth which would make it an extremely inefficient weapon (assuming the rods even survived the fall)

    • @aridianknight3576
      @aridianknight3576 7 днів тому
